I read The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More by Chris Anderson.
1. What was the general theme or argument of the book?
The long tail is related to supply and demand. There are thousands of products out there that have not been purchased by a huge market, so they make up a "long tail" of items. This book was mainly about how selling things has changed so much over the last few decades due to all the technology advances. Nowadays, it makes more sense to sell a lot of products to reach a variety of different markets to make more income instead of just focusing on one product and trying to make it perfect so a lot of people will buy it. Anderson says in the book how easy it is nowadays for anyone to sell products because of the access to the internet and technological advances.
2. How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT3003?
This book connects with this class because it talks a lot about the best way to make more sales and as an entrepreneur that is the goal. Having a variety of products that reach different markets will make you more money these days, so that could be a good point to think about when becoming an entrepreneur. It also points out how much technology has changed over the past decades, and I can't even imagine how much it will continue to change in the future, so that is also something to consider when becoming an entrepreneur or even when writing about your business opportunity in this class.
3. If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
I would design an exercise that had to do with a blog post about your opportunity that you chose to write about for this class. You would have to include how your business might be affected by technological advances and also how you would design your business to incorporate multiple different products to reach maximum sales.
4. What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
To be honest when i first read the title of the book I thought it was going to be about how to sell less things and make more money, but I clearly read it wrong! I was very happy when I started reading this book because it seemed like valuable information I can take with me after this class and even when I start my career. I think everyone should read this book because it really explains how to have a competitive advantage over others when selling products.
Hey Emma, I appreciated reading about your selected book. I have previously never heard of Chris Anderson before reading your post. It seems like he was one heck of entrepreneur. I wonder if reading his book would change the way I went about this class? probably not. Anyways, you had a really nice post, and I especially enjoyed reading about your biggest aha moment from reading this book. Great job!
ReplyDeleteHey Emma, this book sounds really interesting. I see the point of how technology has improved so fast that now the way of selling products in completely different from before. We will get to a point in which we will be able to personally log in into our VR world and select what we want in 3D. Let's see where we'll get to!
ReplyDeleteHey Emma, very good reading reflection, I found it pretty interesting and I guess I had never thought about how more businesses sell a large array of items rather than more perfected items these days. This could definitely be implemented into our ventures in this class as we are trying to perfect them rather than sella. wide variety. Your aha moment definitely made me chuckle, very good job overall.
